El pasado simple

• Pasado simple:  Si conoces el presente simple te será muy fácil repasar el pasado simple. Comparemos ambos tiempos. El presente simple se utiliza para expresar hábitos, costumbres, rutinas y verdades universales, mientras que el pasado simple se usa para hablar de acciones completadas y terminadas en el pasado. En cuanto a la forma, observa estos cuadros.

Afirmativa

Presente simple -infinitivo o infinitivo + (e)s	Pasado simple -añadimos -ed
I/we/you/they play,stop,study,wash,pass... He/she/it plays,stops,studies,washes,passes...	I/he/she/it/we/you/they played,stopped,studied,washed,passed

Negativa

Presente simple -añadimos don't o doesn't + infinitivo	Pasado simple -añadimos didn't en lugar de don't o doesn't
I/we/you/they don't play,stop,study,wash,pass... He/she/it doesn't play,stop,study,wash,pass...	I/he/she/it/we/you/they didn't play,stop,study...

Interrogativa

Presente simple -pon do o does +Sujeto + infinitivo	Pasado simple -añadimos did en vez de do o does
do I/we/you/they  play,stop,study,wash,pass...? does he/she/it  play,stop,study,wash,pass..?	did I/he/she/it/we/you/they  play,stop,study...?

Notas:

• Cuidado con los verbos irregulares: No obedecen la regla -ed.   write-wrote, go-went... Por tanto, hay que aprenderlos de memoria y siempre están en la segunda columna de la lista: write  wrote   written, go  went  gone, break  broke  broken...

• El pasado simple suele ir acompañado de adverbios o expresiones de tiempo para decir cuándo ocurrió algo: 

She broke her arm two days ago(=hace)  We went to the cinema last weekend/yesterday...

• En la forma interrogativa el verbo to be  siempre viene antes del sujeto.

Is she she in the office?      Was she in the office yesterday morning?  Were they at home?

• Los pronombres interrogativos (when, what time, how much, why, what...) siempre vienen al principio de la pregunta y las preposiciones al final.

Who Is she she in the office with?   When was she in the office?   Where were they?

• Cuando el pronombre interrogativo es el sujeto de la pregunta no se utiliza did. Compara las dos preguntas sobre la misma frase.

Sandra helped Sheila:     Who helped Sheila?    Who did Sandra help?
